3 Early-Spring Tips to Get Your AC Ready for Summer

Don't wait for the first heatwave. A little preparation now means a cool house all season.

Blog AC Maintenance

As the last traces of Michigan’s winter melt away, it’s easy to forget about the summer heat that’s just around the corner. But early spring is the right time to prepare your air conditioning system. A few simple steps now prevent a stressful, expensive breakdown during the first real heatwave.

Here are three things to do to get your AC in shape for the cooling season.

1. Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser needs to breathe. Over fall and winter, leaves, dirt, twigs, and debris pile up around and on top of it, restricting airflow. That forces the system to work harder, cuts efficiency, and raises the risk of overheating. Take a few minutes to:

  • Clear leaves, grass clippings, and branches within at least a two-foot radius
  • Gently hose down the exterior fins with a garden hose — not a pressure washer — to remove packed-in dirt and dust

2. Change the Indoor Air Filter

A familiar tip for a reason. A clogged air filter is the number one cause of HVAC system failure. It restricts airflow, so the AC struggles to move cool air through the house. That drives up energy bills and puts unnecessary strain on components. Start the season with a new, clean filter.

3. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

The first two are good DIY tasks, but nothing replaces a professional inspection. An annual AC tune-up is the best way to know your system is running safely and efficiently. During a maintenance visit a technician will:

  • Check refrigerant levels
  • Clean the indoor evaporator and outdoor condenser coils
  • Inspect and tighten electrical connections
  • Lubricate moving parts to reduce friction
  • Verify the thermostat is calibrated correctly

This catches small issues before they become mid-summer emergencies.

Beat the Rush

Preparing your AC in spring keeps your family comfortable and the system running efficiently all summer. It also means you’re not calling on the first 95-degree day along with everyone else.
