Don't Get Spooked: 3 Common Furnace Noises and What They Mean

Hearing things that go bump in the night from your basement? Here's what those sounds actually mean.

It’s Halloween in Michigan, and the only spooky sounds you should be hearing are from trick-or-treaters, not your HVAC system. As your furnace kicks into high gear for the cold months, you may start noticing strange noises. Some are harmless. Others are a sign of a real problem. Here’s how to decode them.

1. The “Bang” or “Pop”

What it sounds like: A loud bang or popping sound, often right after the furnace turns on.

What it might be: Two possibilities. Often it’s just metal ductwork expanding and contracting as it heats and cools, which is normal. But a loud single bang from the unit itself is more serious. That can be delayed ignition, where gas builds up in the combustion chamber before igniting. That’s a safety hazard and needs inspection.

2. The Screech or Grind

What it sounds like: A high-pitched squeal, screech, or a metallic grinding.

What it might be: This is a cry for help and almost always mechanical. Usually a worn-out blower motor bearing or a problem with the blower wheel — it may be loose, or something’s caught in it. If you hear this, shut the system off immediately to prevent further damage and call a professional.

3. The Whistle or Hum

What it sounds like: A high-pitched whistle, or a steady hum louder than usual.

What it might be: Most often something simple: a dirty, clogged air filter. The whistle is air struggling to get through. That restricts airflow, strains the system, and raises your energy bills. Check the filter first and replace it if it’s dirty. If the sound continues with a clean filter, it could be a failing motor.

Don’t Let Furnace Noises Haunt You

A noisy furnace isn’t just annoying — it’s the system telling you something is wrong. Ignoring it leads to more expensive repairs, or a full breakdown in the dead of winter.

If you hear scraping or banging especially, don’t wait.
